Full Custom Website

Build a fast, scalable WordPress site—hand‑coded to your brand with no builder bloat or lock‑in.

Full Custom Website

Fast, flexible, and fully yours

Let’s build a WordPress site that’s fast, flexible, and unmistakably yours—without page builders or cookie-cutter templates. We hand-code a custom theme around your brand, content model, and daily workflows so it’s easy to manage and built to last. Bring approved designs or start from scratch; we can collaborate with your branding agency or lead the whole build.

Modern developer desk with dual monitors showing a component library and clean code, plus a laptop displaying a block-based page editor and a small screen with Core Web Vitals metrics.

Every site is tuned for Core Web Vitals, security, and scalability. You own the code, design, and content. We leave clear documentation and training so your team stays in control. No long-term lock-in—host anywhere WordPress runs. Want AI tools, a chatbot, or marketing integrations baked in? We plan for that from day one with WordPress‑ready AI integrations.

Want to know what “full custom” includes? See what comes standard below.

What’s included in a Full Custom build

Every Full Custom engagement delivers the strategy, build quality, and safeguards your team needs to launch fast and grow with confidence—without the bloat. Here’s what’s included, end to end:

  • Discovery workshop and requirements capture

A focused stakeholder session to define goals, audiences, success metrics, scope, constraints, content ownership, integrations, and timeline. You get a clear, prioritized requirements brief everyone can rally around—so we start fast and stay aligned.

  • Information architecture and content modeling

Site map, navigation, taxonomies, and a content model (post types, custom fields, relationships, workflows) that makes publishing easy and consistent. Includes a right-sized migration plan if you’re coming from an existing site.

  • Bespoke design system (components, states, responsive specs)

An on-brand component library with states, spacing/typography tokens, interaction patterns, and responsive specs. Delivered in an organized design file for long-term reuse—speeding up future pages and campaigns. Need web-first design support? Explore our Graphic Designer services.

  • Hand-coded WordPress theme + custom Gutenberg blocks

A lean, from-scratch theme (no page builders, minimal plugins) and reusable custom blocks tailored to your content. Version-controlled code, documented patterns, and editor experiences your team will actually enjoy using. See our approach to Theme Development.

  • Performance budget with CWV targets

LCP < 2.5s, CLS < 0.1, INP < 200ms. We define a budget for page weight and requests, then optimize with critical CSS, code splitting, image and CDN pipelines (WebP/AVIF), caching, and lazy loading. We build to the budget and verify with lab and field data. How we handle performance optimization and caching.

  • Accessibility baseline to WCAG 2.2 AA

Semantic markup, keyboard navigation, visible focus, color contrast, ARIA where needed, alt text and captions, form labels, skip links, and testing with assistive tech—baked in from day one to expand reach and reduce risk.

  • Security hardening and role-based permissions

Least-privilege roles, MFA-ready logins, rate limiting, vetted plugins, server and config hardening, automated backups, and update workflows—practical protection for your team and your data.

  • Technical SEO: metadata, schema, redirects, sitemap, robots

Clean URL structure, canonical tags, Open Graph and Twitter cards, structured data (schema.org), XML sitemap, robots.txt, and 301 redirect mapping for safe migrations. A solid foundation search engines (and users) love. If you’re a local business, see how we approach Local SEO.

  • Analytics setup (GA4), goals/events, and dashboards

GA4 property and event model tuned to your funnel, conversion tracking, Search Console linking, consent settings, and a clear performance dashboard (e.g., Looker Studio)—so you know what’s working and what to improve next. Related: Can you set up Google Analytics or other tracking tools?

  • Key integrations (CRM, marketing automation, chat, payments, APIs)

Integrations with tools like HubSpot or Salesforce, Mailchimp or Klaviyo, Stripe or PayPal, chat/helpdesk, calendars, and custom APIs. Fully tested end to end, without brittle glue code. See our Business Process Automation approach.

  • CMS training, documentation, and a structured launch plan

Live editor training (recorded), admin guides, content governance tips, staging and UAT, a go-live checklist with rollback plan, and post-launch monitoring. Your team leaves confident and in control.

Not sure you need all of this? Up next, when a full custom build makes sense—and when a theme or builder may be a better fit. Want a quick fit check or ballpark? Call 314-657-7421 or email jc@stlcodescape.com and we’ll talk through options in 15 minutes.

Is Full Custom right for you?

Choose a full custom WordPress build when your website is central to your business and you need control, performance, and room to grow. It fits if you’re aiming for:

  • Complex workflows or unique UX: quoting or estimating, member portals, gated resources, multi-location content, or product rules that don’t fit plug-and-play tools.
  • Key integrations: CRM or ERP automations, marketing automation, payment gateways, or proprietary data sources that need reliable, maintainable connections.
  • Performance and SEO advantage: Core Web Vitals targets, a lean front end, structured data, and technical SEO that templates often miss. See our custom WordPress approach.
  • Long-term scalability: a design system and content model you can evolve without rebuilding or wrestling a page builder.

If two or more sound like you, custom is likely the smarter path. Not sure? Book a 15‑minute fit check—no obligation, clear next steps, and a quick ballpark. Call 314-657-7421 or email jc@stlcodescape.com.

When a theme or page builder may suffice

  • Simple brochure sites: a handful of pages, light interactivity, and no special integrations.
  • Tight timelines or small starter budgets: you need something live fast to validate messaging, then plan to upgrade later.
  • Short-term campaigns or landing pages: time-boxed initiatives where speed to launch outweighs extensibility.

If that’s you, we’ll be honest and recommend a lean starter build—and a roadmap to graduate to custom when it makes financial sense.

Total cost of ownership: why custom often wins over time

  • Fewer plugin dependencies and cleaner, purpose-built code reduce breakage, conflicts, and license fees.
  • Smaller attack surface and simpler update paths lower maintenance risk.
  • Better performance improves SEO, conversion rates, and hosting efficiency.
  • Longer lifespan: you iterate on a solid foundation instead of re-platforming every couple of years.

Want to see the math for your situation? Ask for a side‑by‑side TCO comparison for the next 12–24 months.

Risks of builder bloat

  • Heavier CSS and JS that slow LCP, INP, and CLS.
  • Frequent plugin or theme conflicts and higher maintenance overhead.
  • Limited extensibility: workarounds today become roadblocks tomorrow.
  • Possible lock-in to proprietary builders and templates.

Already feeling the bloat? We can unwind it step‑by‑step—optimize what you have, replace risky plugins, or phase into a custom theme without downtime.

If you choose custom, expect weeks, not days, for discovery, design, and engineering. Most projects run across a few sprints with a higher upfront investment that pays off in stability and performance. Have a target launch date? We’ll shape sprints around it. Ready to explore? Call 314-657-7421 or send a quick note to jc@stlcodescape.com for a no‑pressure consult.

Project sizing: timeline and investment snapshot

Here’s what to expect for a full custom WordPress build with STL CodeScape—right-sized to your goals and timeline, with zero fluff and clear decisions at every step.

Timelines

  • 8–12 weeks: Standard marketing site with an on-brand design system, 6–12 unique page templates, and essential integrations (analytics, CRM form capture, email).
  • 12–20+ weeks: Complex builds such as ecommerce, member portals, multi-language, advanced search/filters, or integrations with CRMs, ERPs, LMS, booking, or HRIS.

Need to hit a specific date? Tell us early—phased launches and limited rush capacity are available.

What drives investment and schedule

  • UX and design depth: level of strategy, prototyping, and micro-interactions.
  • Number of unique page templates and custom WordPress blocks.
  • Integrations: CRM (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce), ERP, inventory, booking, job boards, LMS, maps, or payment gateways.
  • Ecommerce complexity: product types (simple, variable, subscription), tax and shipping logic, custom checkout, third-party services.
  • Content scope: volume of new pages, migration from legacy systems, redirects, copy and imagery, translations.
  • Accessibility and performance targets: WCAG 2.2 AA, Core Web Vitals budgets, hosting architecture.
  • Stakeholder cadence: availability for reviews and timely approvals.
  • SEO readiness: information architecture, schema, redirects, and on-page content needs.

We’ll map these in discovery so you can prioritize must‑haves for launch and park nice‑to‑haves for a V1.1. Curious about our UX philosophy? Read our approach to UX and conversion-focused design.

How we keep budgets predictable

A short discovery (typically 1–2 weeks) defines user stories, sitemap and content model, acceptance criteria, integrations, and a performance budget. That clarity locks scope, reduces change orders, and protects the timeline. You’ll receive a fixed-scope proposal with transparent line items, milestone billing, and optional phases if you want to spread investment.

Want quick numbers?

Ready to reserve a start date? Reach out now—project slots often book a few weeks in advance.

Our process: strategy to launch and beyond

A full custom build works best when decisions are made early and tested before code. We follow a clear workflow where each phase has defined deliverables and sign-off. That keeps the schedule intact and ties work to your goals. Want to see sample deliverables from past projects? Just ask and we’ll share relevant examples.

Strategy & Requirements

Team collaborating in a workshop, pointing at a whiteboard covered with sitemap boxes and color-coded sticky notes labeled Home, Services, Locations, Resources, Blog, Contact, and content types.

We meet with stakeholders, capture goals and constraints, and define success. This includes stakeholder interviews, goal alignment, and a content inventory to find gaps and opportunities. By the end, everyone knows exactly what we’re building and why. If you’re exploring vendors, start here—one focused strategy session can clarify scope and budget fast.

Outputs: project brief, scorecard, analytics and goal plan, prioritized requirements, initial performance budget, and a risk and assumption log.

IA & Content Model

We plan how users find and manage information. This covers a site map, taxonomy, and a reusable content model with types and fields matched to your publishing workflow. This is how we prevent content chaos later and keep your team fast.

Outputs: approved site map, taxonomy matrix, content type and field definitions, URL patterns, and a 301 redirect plan.

UX Prototypes

We prototype key journeys to validate flow and hierarchy before visuals. Expect wireframes, interaction flows, and quick usability feedback to catch friction early—this is where we protect your budget and timeline.

Outputs: low- to mid-fidelity wireframes, task flows, annotated feedback, and an updated scope if testing suggests changes.

Visual Design System

We turn strategy and UX into a cohesive system you can scale. Components and states are designed with accessible color and typography from the start, so your team can ship new pages without reinventing anything. If you need additional creative support, our web-first graphic design team can help.

Outputs: design system library, responsive component specs and states, motion guidelines, and a tokenized color and type scale with contrast checks.

Development

We build a custom WordPress theme, not a page-builder stack, using a Git-based workflow and standards that keep your codebase clean and portable. We create custom blocks tailored to your content model and integrate your APIs and tools—so marketing moves fast without calling a developer for every change. Learn more about our Custom WordPress Theme Development.

Outputs: private Git repository, standards-compliant codebase, custom WordPress blocks, configured environments (local, staging, production), and documented API integrations.

Performance Engineering

We engineer for speed from day one, following the performance budget set in strategy. Techniques include modern image formats and optimization, code splitting, defer and async loading, caching and CDN configuration, and query optimization. See also: performance optimization and caching.

Outputs: performance plan, before and after benchmarks, Core Web Vitals tracking, and a tuned caching and CDN setup.

QA & Accessibility

Quality is verified across a defined device and browser matrix with automated and manual checks. Accessibility is tested to WCAG 2.2 AA with keyboard navigation, screen reader passes, forms validation, and contrast verification. Regression tests guard against breakage as features evolve.

Outputs: test plan and results, WCAG conformance report, defect log with resolutions, and regression test suites.

Content Migration & Training

We move content in a structured, low-risk way and equip your team to own the CMS. This includes a migration plan, content freeze windows where needed, and hands-on editor training—so your team is confident on day one.

Outputs: migration checklist and QA, redirect map implemented, role-based permissions, training sessions, and step-by-step editor guides.

Launch & 90-Day Optimization

Go-live follows a detailed cutover checklist with monitoring for uptime, errors, and Core Web Vitals. The first 90 days focus on fixes and iterative improvements tied to your goals. We don’t disappear after launch—we help you capture quick wins and momentum.

Outputs: launch runbook, monitoring and alerting, issue remediation, optimization backlog, and reviews at 30, 60, and 90 days.

Performance, SEO, and accessibility by default

Every full custom build from STL CodeScape ships with a performance budget, search-ready architecture, and an accessibility baseline so your site is fast, findable, and usable by everyone from day one.

Minimal dashboard UI with Core Web Vitals metrics, a performance budget gauge, an accessibility WCAG AA score, and technical SEO checklist with green status indicators.

Core Web Vitals targets

  • Targets we commit to (and report on): LCP < 2.5s, CLS < 0.1, INP < 200ms.
  • How we hit them: lean, hand-coded theme (no page‑builder bloat); critical CSS; deferred or conditional scripts; modern image formats (AVIF/WebP) with responsive srcsets; optimized fonts (preload, swap); server and CDN caching; and a minimal plugin footprint.
  • How we verify: lab testing (Lighthouse CI, WebPageTest) and field data (PageSpeed Insights, GA4) before launch, at launch, and during the 90-day optimization window—with clear, shareable reports. Learn more about performance optimization.

Technical SEO foundations

  • Structured data: schema.org for Organization/LocalBusiness, BreadcrumbList, Service/Product, Article/BlogPosting, and FAQ where useful.
  • Canonicalization: rel=canonical, pagination rules, and trailing-slash/HTTPS normalization.
  • Crawl and index controls: XML sitemap submission, clean robots.txt, meta robots directives, and accurate hreflang if needed.
  • Redirect strategy: 301 mappings for legacy URLs, 410s for removals, and automated 404 logging to catch misses.
  • SERP presentation: optimized titles and meta descriptions, Open Graph and Twitter cards, and clean, human-readable URLs.

Local presence matters. If you’re targeting a geographic area, here’s how we handle Local SEO for local businesses.

Observability and monitoring

  • GA4 configured with clear event naming and conversions (form submissions, CTA clicks, file downloads, on-site search, video plays).
  • Search Console set up and verified (coverage, enhancements, sitemaps), with alerts enabled.
  • Uptime and performance monitors (e.g., Pingdom or UptimeRobot, SpeedCurve or Lighthouse CI) with threshold-based alerts.
  • Error logging and telemetry: server/PHP logs, JavaScript error capture, and automated 404/reporting dashboards sent to your inbox or Slack.

We measure all of this. Want a quick read on your current site? Request a no-pressure performance + SEO snapshot and we’ll highlight your biggest wins. Launch with these on day one, or pilot them right after go‑live to prove impact before you scale. Want to see it in action? Ask for a quick demo and we’ll walk you through real examples.

AI integrations we implement

  • On-site chatbots that answer product or service questions using approved content, deflect routine support, log issues to your CRM, and hand off to humans when needed
  • AI-powered semantic search that understands intent, with vector indexing of your pages, docs, and FAQs to reduce “no results” dead ends
  • Content assistance inside WordPress: generate briefs, alt text, meta, internal link ideas, and on-brand variations in the editor sidebar—without leaving your workflow
  • Workflow automation: auto-tag and route leads, summarize long-form submissions, push hot questions to Slack, and create tickets in tools like HubSpot or Zendesk
  • Guardrails by default: first-party data handling, consent-aware tracking, PII redaction, rate limits, and model/provider choices that match your risk profile and budget (no lock‑in)

Social media management that drives site traffic

  • Strategy and planning tied to your campaigns and SEO targets, with a shared editorial calendar so everyone stays aligned
  • Content creation (copy, graphics, video snippets), adapted per platform and tagged with UTMs back to key site goals for clear attribution

Tighter loop, smarter CRO

  • We connect chatbot queries, site search terms, and social comments to your content model and testing roadmap so insights turn into action

FAQs: timelines, content, integrations, accessibility, and more

How do timelines work, and what speeds things up or slows them down?

We map a realistic schedule up front so you know exactly what happens when—and what we need from you to hit the date.

  • Typical ranges: 8–14 weeks for a marketing site with about 8–12 page templates and standard integrations; 16–24+ weeks for complex functionality (ecommerce, membership, custom apps, heavy integrations).
  • How we set it: Align on scope in a discovery call, confirm requirements in a brief workshop, then produce a dated project plan with milestones (strategy, design, development, content, QA, launch).
  • Accelerators: a single decision-maker or tight approval chain, content ready early, fast feedback (within 48 hours), fewer unique templates, limited third-party integrations, and steady scope.
  • Delays: content bottlenecks, mid-stream scope changes, complex or slow third parties (payment, SSO, ERP), legal/compliance reviews, and late assets (logos, imagery, credentials).

Want to move faster or de-risk a deadline? We can phase the project (core pages first, enhancements after launch) and run weekly standups. Ask for a sample project plan. Related: How long does it take to design and develop a website?

What drives budget on a full custom build?

We’ll translate scope into a clear, fixed proposal with options—no surprises—and can sequence work into phases to match your budget.

  • Page template count and content types (e.g., blog, resources, case studies, locations)
  • Custom functionality (ecommerce, gated content, membership, calculators, quoting, advanced search/filters)
  • Integrations (CRM/ERP/marketing automation/payment/SSO) and their complexity
  • Content creation and migration (new copywriting, rewriting, CMS population, redirects, media optimization)
  • Design depth (design system, micro-interactions, animation) and QA scope (device and browser matrix)
  • Performance, SEO, and accessibility requirements beyond our included baseline

Want a fast ballpark? Share your must-haves on a quick call and we’ll outline options.

Who handles content? Do you help with writing and SEO?

Yes. Bring finalized copy, or lean on us. We’ll meet you where you are.

  • Content strategy and messaging workshops
  • Wireframe-based content outlines and editing
  • Full copywriting with SEO (keyword research, on-page optimization, internal linking)
  • Content migration and CMS population, plus redirect mapping to preserve SEO

Prefer a draft-first approach? We can use AI-assisted outlines with human editing to speed reviews. We agree on a “content freeze” date so development and QA stay on track. See our AI Content Creation for WordPress.

What accessibility standard do you build to?

We target WCAG 2.2 AA as the default for new builds, including semantic HTML, proper headings and landmarks, labeled forms, skip links, keyboard operability, visible focus states, color contrast compliance, media alt text, and accessible components. We test with automated tools and manual checks.

Formal audits, VPATs, document/PDF remediation, and ongoing governance can be added if required.

Can you integrate with our CRM, ERP, marketing tools, or payments?

Yes. Common integrations include HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoho, Mailchimp, Klaviyo, GA4/GTM, Hotjar, WooCommerce, Stripe, PayPal, Authorize.net, ShipStation, Calendly, Okta/Azure AD SSO, and custom REST/GraphQL APIs.

Process: define data flows and authentication, coordinate sandbox keys, implement on staging, add logging and error handling, and document admin settings. We can also use webhooks and automation tools (Zapier/Make) where appropriate. Learn how we connect website to back office with Business Process Automation.

Where will the site be hosted?

Recommended managed WordPress options: Kinsta or WP Engine for performance, backups, and security. Bring-your-own is welcome if it meets minimum specs (current PHP, MySQL/MariaDB, SSH/SFTP, staging, backups). You retain full access and can move hosts anytime. Or explore our managed WordPress hosting.

What training is included?

Standard: 2–3 live role-based sessions (60–90 minutes each) covering content updates, media, custom blocks, forms, redirects, and analytics basics. All sessions are recorded. You also receive a tailored admin guide and short how-to videos. Post-launch, we include a support window for quick questions; ongoing training can be added to a care plan.

Who owns the site and licenses? Do you offer a warranty, and how do change orders work?

Ownership: you own the custom theme and code, design files, and all site content. Licensing: paid plugin, font, or stock licenses are documented and assigned to your org. Warranty: 60-day post-launch defect warranty covering in-scope items. Change orders: new features or material changes are estimated and approved before work begins, either as a fixed addendum or time and materials within a retainer.

Have a question we didn’t answer? Get a clear scope and timeline in a short consult. Call 314-657-7421, email jc@stlcodescape.com, or request a custom estimate at stlcodescape.com.
