Unity Web GL Inside of House What I was up to last week? Well … last week was mostly Oculus Go exploration. I’m really happy about Oculus Go. It really feels like it will be a permanent frequently used device. And I know it’s going to replace my regular pc headset. It’s just too easy to use and comes with little web things that the Rift doesn’t. Like I said in previous posts, I’m mostly interested in VR from a web perspective. So the Oculus Go is exactly where I want VR to go. I’m also glad Zuck is so involved. He keeps the “web” aspect in the forefront and not just a afterthought. They do need to get on the ball with making their browser “Unity WebGL Ready.” That was a disappointment. I spun up a small WebGL scene and tried to run it in the Oculus browser and it didn’t work. So that sucked. But AFrame JS is on the ball. It works well. Just no controller as of yet. I’m sure that will change soon. But when you press the “goggles” in the corner the Oculus runs that real well. So it’s all good. Just a little longer and it will be fine. Other than that I was experimenting with AI a little. Real simple stuff but it was interesting. If I get anywhere with it I’ll write a post.
Oculus Go In Package Well, here it is. Just bought the Oculus Go and took it for a test run. And I have to say … IT’S AMAZING!!! And I hate to say this but after trying out the Go I’m almost sorry I bought the Rift. As far as Web VR goes, right out the box it’s better than the rift. It comes with a browser that detects any 360 video and then submerges you in it. The Rift doesn’t do that. That is a HUGE deal. It also came out the box with a internal keyboard that activates on input. And it’s set up with little features that make web browsing intuitive. In the Rift you have to find special settings to get the keyboard and it just doesn’t flow as nice as the Go in the web browsing experience. And of course I have had annoying issues with set up and functionality with the Rift interacting with Windows 10. With the Go you just … GO. … and it’s smooth as silk. I couldn’t be happier so far. Only weird thing is the browser displays content as if you are on a phone and WordPress’ “is_mobile” function detects it as mobile. And AFrame js of course hasn’t caught up with the new controller. BUT … this is so promising I know it won’t take any time. This is going to change the web. I’m ready to add “Oculus Browser” to my list of browsers to test in development. This is what I want. I want to develop in Unity, publish to web, and view in Oculus ( or any VR ). That is the end workflow goal for me. Okay… So I got the Oculus Rift. One of the first things I did with it was get in to see what the Javascript Library “A Frame” looked like. To my disappointment I clicked the googles and all that happened was the flat screen inside the oculus rift that looked like a regular computer screen divided into two. It looked just like a phone does when you are trying to get Google Cardboard VR to work. So I was like … hu. Well … that’s not exactly what I expected. I quickly realized that in order for web VR to work with a actual VR device it would have to interface with the browser. And what that meant was the browsers would have to detect the oculus rift and then feed the visual information to the headset device in a much different way than feeding the visual information just to a standard flat screen. This was only one of the awkward fumbles that I encountered when heading to web VR for the first few weeks. The first was turning on Oculus 2 in order to get a native virtual desktop and a standard keyboard. What is interesting ( and dismaying ) about all this is seeing that … this stuff is far from flushed out. This is not a well paved road here. These new devices and browsers haven’t quite worked out in a standard way how they are going to communicate with each other. The road as of right now is full of brush and thorns. BUT, there is certainly progress. And man the people working this stuff out need a extra round of applause because this chaos must be daunting. So, where are we at? Okay, to get web VR working ( at least in the Rift .. not sure about Vive ) you need to download FireFox Nightly or Chrome Canary. I went with Firefox Nightly. You have to make sure Unknown Sources is enabled ( check out this awesome gif from omnivirt.com ) setting Oculus Unknown Sources to true Okay … now in Firefox Nightly dial up the URL you want to view.
